What it is
Practical supports to help a person with a disability get or keep a job and to help their employer. It replaced the Reasonable Accommodation Fund and the Disability Awareness Support Scheme. It covers a Workplace Needs Assessment (up to €2,500), work equipment and assistive technology (up to €12,000 for the workplace and a further €12,000 for a remote working premises), workplace adaptations (up to €25,000), an in-work support or job coach (up to €12,500 a year), sign language interpreting, a personal reader and disability equality training for staff (the scheme pays 80% or 90% of eligible costs, on training costing up to €20,000 a year). Budget 2027 announced an increase in the hours of Communication Support and Irish Sign Language under this scheme, so check the official page for the current limits.
Who can get it
- You have a disability and you are getting into work, or already in work and need support to stay there
- You or your employer need a workplace change, equipment or in work help for the job to work
- You are applying through the Department of Social Protection. Public sector workers, public sector employers and unpaid work such as a voluntary role are not covered
- There are seven strands: a workplace needs assessment up to €2,500, communication support including Irish Sign Language, in work support up to €12,500 a year, a personal reader, work equipment up to €12,000 for the workplace plus up to €12,000 for a remote working premises, workplace adaptations up to €25,000 and disability equality and inclusion training, where the scheme pays 80% or 90% of costs on training costing up to €20,000 a year.
- It replaced the Reasonable Accommodation Fund and the Disability Awareness Support Scheme, so older guidance you find online may use the old names.
- It supports the employer as well as the employee, which makes it an easier conversation to have at work than people expect.
- Eligibility is based on your work needs and NOT on a medical diagnosis. The condition has to be likely to last more than 12 months. You either get a long-term disability payment or you give professional evidence of it, such as a GP letter or an existing report. Screen reading and voice recognition software are named examples of what the equipment strand pays for.
