Free Contraception Scheme
Free contraception, including the pill, LARC methods (the coil or implant), emergency contraception, and the consultations that go with them. There is no cost to you at the point of care.

What it is
Free prescription and emergency contraception, GP or pharmacist consultations, and LARC (long-acting reversible contraception) fitting, removal and check-ups, for women, girls and transgender or non-binary people aged 17 to 36. Costs an estimated €48m a year.
Who can get it
- You are ordinarily resident in Ireland
- You are a woman, girl, or transgender or non-binary person
- You are aged 17 to 36 (from your 17th up to your 36th birthday)
- Covers the contraceptive pill, patch, ring, injection, implant and coil (LARC), plus emergency contraception.
- Covers the GP or pharmacist consultation needed to prescribe or fit it, and LARC fitting, removal and follow-up check-ups.
- You access it through a participating GP or pharmacist, no separate application, just say you want to avail of the scheme when you book.
