Solar PV grant

€700 per kWp for the first 2kWp, then €200 for each extra kWp up to 4kWp, capped at €1,800. So €1,400 for a 2kWp system, €1,600 for 3kWp, and €1,800 for 4kWp or more.

What it is

Toward rooftop solar panels for your home. The home must have been built and occupied before 2025. It also needs an MPRN, which is the number for its electricity connection, so a home off the grid does not qualify. A separate €600 SEAI grant covers a home battery of 5kWh or larger. Homeowners on certain welfare payments can get much higher rates, up to €9,000 with a battery. See the solar and battery grant for welfare recipients.

Who can get it

You own the home. Private landlords, owner management companies and Approved Housing Bodies can also apply
The home was built and occupied before 2025 and has an electricity connection (an MPRN)
The home has not had a solar PV grant before at this MPRN, and the panels have not already been paid for by another government scheme (a home getting Defective Concrete Blocks (Mica) funding can still apply even if it had SEAI solar support under another scheme)
You get grant approval before you buy any panels or start work. You use an SEAI registered solar company that is on the register both when you apply and when the work is done

Good to know

From 5pm on 6 October 2026, when SEAI's application portal reopened, the grant is open to homes built and occupied before 2025, up from before 2021. SEAI's grant page now says this. The Government's announcement said the change was subject to final arrangements, so check the SEAI page before you apply.
The grant is paid per kWp of panels: €700 for each of the first 2kWp, then €200 for each extra kWp, up to the €1,800 maximum.
Once you have grant approval you have 8 months to finish the work and send in the documents.
Your installer must apply to ESB Networks before fitting the panels, which usually takes at least four weeks. You get the grant rate in force on the day you apply.
A post-works BER is needed after the panels go in.
You can only use a One Stop Shop for solar if you are doing several upgrades at once. Otherwise apply yourself with a registered contractor.
Only one solar PV system per property is grant-funded. You must confirm the panels have not already been paid for by another government scheme. A home that already had SEAI solar PV support under another scheme cannot apply, unless it is getting Defective Concrete Blocks (Mica) funding, see below.
Your contractor needs a Safe Electric Certificate (Certificate Number 3) for the installation. Tax clearance is only needed if your combined SEAI grants go over €10,000 in one calendar year.
If your home is getting Defective Concrete Blocks (Mica) funding from the council, you can still claim this SEAI grant. Clause 43 of SEAI's Solar PV terms and conditions relaxes several of the usual rules for these homes.
Giving false information, or breaching the terms after payment, can mean SEAI reclaims the grant.
