Home battery grant
A flat €600 for a battery of 5kWh or larger. Batteries smaller than 5kWh do not qualify.
Last checked October 2026
What it is
A flat €600 SEAI grant towards a home battery that stores electricity, for example from solar panels. It is for batteries of 5kWh or larger. Open for applications since 6 October 2026. The home needs an MPRN and must have been built and occupied before 2025, with no previous battery funding at that MPRN. You do not need solar panels to have a battery. You use an SEAI registered solar PV contractor and need a grant offer before the battery is installed. SEAI says that if you are only installing one measure now you may apply for the other later, provided you meet the rules at that time. You can make one combined application if you want both. A post-works BER is needed if you also have solar PV.
Who can get it
- You own the home. Private landlords, owner management companies and Approved Housing Bodies can also apply
- The home has an MPRN, the number for its electricity connection. It was built and occupied before 2025
- The home has not had funding for a battery before at this MPRN
- You do not need solar panels. SEAI says that with a battery on its own it is important to be on a tariff with cheaper electricity at certain times, such as a day/night rate, so you charge it when power is cheaper.
- You must have SEAI's grant offer before the battery is installed. An SEAI registered solar PV contractor must install it. SEAI cannot accept applications for installations that have already started.
- Once approved you have 8 months to finish the works and send in the paperwork. After that the grant expires. Your installer must apply to ESB Networks before fitting the battery, which usually takes at least 4 weeks.
- A post-works BER is needed if the home has solar panels.
- If you are getting panels and a battery together, one application covers both. If you already have a solar application, you leave it as it is and make a new application for the battery. If you install one now and the other later, you must still meet the rules when you apply for the second.
- SEAI puts the cost of a fully installed battery at roughly €3,500 to €5,500. It says there is 0% VAT on a battery fitted at the same time as solar panels. A battery fitted on its own has 23% VAT.
- A standard installation switches the battery off in a power cut. To use it as backup, it has to be set up with a changeover switch, so ask your installer.
- If you already have panels, your installer needs to check your inverter. SEAI says standard string inverters do not work with a battery, so you may need a new hybrid inverter.

Where to start
Get quotes from SEAI registered solar PV companies, then apply online through SEAI and wait for your grant offer by email before any work starts. Check that the company named in the offer is the one doing the job. After the battery is fitted, the company sends SEAI the paperwork. If the home has solar panels, the post-works BER must also be published. SEAI then pays the grant into the bank account you nominated, allowing 4 to 6 weeks, longer if your home is picked for an inspection that needs rework.

Questions people ask
How much is the home battery grant?
A flat €600 from SEAI, for a battery of 5kWh or larger. Batteries smaller than 5kWh do not qualify.
Do I need solar panels to get the battery grant?
No. SEAI says you can have a battery without solar panels, but it is important to be on a tariff with cheaper electricity at certain times, such as a day/night rate, so you can charge the battery when power is cheaper. A post-works BER is only needed for the battery grant if the home has solar panels.
Can I add a battery to the solar panels I already have?
Yes, as long as the home meets the conditions, including no battery funding before at this MPRN. Your installer will check whether your inverter works with a battery, because SEAI says a standard string inverter does not and you may need a new hybrid inverter. If your solar application is still in progress, you leave it as it is and make a new application for the battery.
Is there VAT on a home battery?
SEAI says there is 0% VAT on a battery fitted at the same time as solar panels. A battery fitted on its own has 23% VAT. Revenue's guidance says the zero rate covers batteries supplied and installed with the panels under the same contract.
