What it is
Since 1 June 2025 the cost of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) medicines is covered for women prescribed HRT to help with the symptoms of menopause, for any HRT product the HSE reimburses. GP or other medical consultations about the menopause are not covered. The pharmacy dispensing fee is covered too, so at a participating pharmacy there is nothing to pay. You need a Drugs Payment Scheme card or a medical card.
Who can get it
- You have a valid prescription for HRT for menopause symptoms
- You have a Drugs Payment Scheme card or a medical card
- You are getting it dispensed in a participating pharmacy
- It has been free since 1 June 2025, so anyone who checked before that date and gave up is working off old information.
- The dispensing fee is covered as well as the medicine, so at a participating pharmacy there is nothing to pay.
- You still need a Drugs Payment Scheme card or a medical card, so it is worth checking you actually have one.
