What it is

Towards renewing or repairing the thatched roof of a house you live in: up to €3,810 or two-thirds of the cost, rising to €6,350 (up to 80%) if you hold a medical card, and higher again on the specified offshore islands.

Who can get it

You own and live in a house with a thatched roof
The works renew or repair the thatch, and a Department inspector has inspected the house before any work starts
You are claiming the standard rate, or the higher rate if you hold a medical card or live on a specified offshore island
The house is at least 10 years old, structurally sound and is your normal home, not a holiday home
The approved cost is more than €952
You have not been paid a thatching grant for this house, under this scheme or the Roinn na Gaeltachta scheme, in the last 7 years
Your tax affairs are in order

The standard grant is up to €3,810, or two-thirds of the approved cost, whichever is less. On the specified islands it is up to €5,714.
Medical card holders can get up to €6,350, or up to 80% of the cost, and up to €8,252 on the islands.
Get approval before starting the work. There is a separate Historic Thatched Buildings stream under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme, up to €20,000 (up to 80% of the cost of works) for any historic thatched structure, home or commercial. You apply to your council and the 2027 round closes no later than 30 October 2026.
