Can I get an SEAI grant if I rent?

The SEAI home energy grants go to the person who owns the home, so as a tenant you generally cannot claim them yourself. Here is who can, and what is actually there for renters.

Last checked July 2026

Why the grant goes to the owner

Grants like insulation, windows and doors, heat pumps and solar are paid to the homeowner, because they pay for a permanent improvement to the property. If you rent, the works and the grant are the owner's to arrange. A private landlord can apply for these grants on a property they rent out.

What is there for renters

As a renter, the supports aimed at you are about the cost of renting rather than the fabric of the building. The Rent Tax Credit is worth up to €1,000 a year, or €2,000 for a jointly assessed couple. It is worth asking your landlord whether they plan to apply for the SEAI grants, since a warmer home benefits you both.

If you own and live in your home and get a qualifying welfare payment, the Warmer Homes Scheme can fully fund upgrades for free. To see everything you might qualify for as a renter, describe your situation to the assistant.
