What it is
Direct funding for Ireland's elite international athletes towards training and competition costs, from €18,000 to €40,000 a year depending on level. You are nominated through your sport's national governing body against strict performance criteria, so it is for athletes competing at European, World, Olympic or Paralympic level. There is no general grant for amateur or club-level athletes; a club can apply for facilities and equipment instead.
Who can get it
- You are an elite athlete competing at European, World, Olympic or Paralympic level
- You are nominated by your sport's national governing body against Sport Ireland's performance criteria
- You are not a club or amateur athlete, this is for the very top level (clubs apply for facilities and equipment instead)
- The level of funding depends on your carding band, roughly €18,000 at international level up to €40,000 for the top Podium level.
- You cannot apply directly, your national governing body nominates you against strict performance standards.
- For 2026 the awards are for one year; Sport Ireland is reintroducing two-year awards from 2027.
