What it is
A free consultancy programme from your Local Enterprise Office to help a small business become more sustainable, cut its energy, water and materials costs, lower its carbon footprint and use its green credentials with customers. You get up to two days with a specialist Green Consultant, matched to your needs, who looks at how the business runs and writes a Green for Business Report with practical changes tailored to you. The Local Enterprise Offices launched it in 2021 as Green for Micro, originally for companies of up to ten employees, and have since extended it to companies of up to 50. The LEO's national green support page, the address the 2021 launch pointed to, now carries it as Green for Business, open to any business with 1 to 50 employees that has been trading for more than six months, has turnover above €30,000 a year and holds current tax clearance. Sole traders, partnerships and companies all qualify, and so do sports clubs that trade, but farms and other primary agriculture do not. The report is the doorway to the LEO Energy Efficiency Grant, which pays 75% of the cost of the equipment it identifies up to €10,000, and the LEO page also points on to GreenStart. Because of the six months trading and €30,000 turnover rules it is for a business that is already up and running, not one you are only starting. Two steps: watch the LEO's Green for Business webinar, then apply through your Local Enterprise Office, which matches you to a consultant whose expertise fits your needs. Businesses in a holding group, franchise or linked companies can make one application only. If you have already done the programme and want to go further, ask your LEO about a follow-on Green for Business support, the Energy Efficiency Grant or GreenStart. Citizens Information still lists it as Green for Micro for businesses with ten or fewer employees, and LEO Louth's own news page confirms the programme was launched in 2021 for companies of up to ten employees and has been extended to companies of up to 50, adding the manufacturing and hospitality sectors. The national LEO page now carries it as Green for Business with the 1 to 50 employee limit, so go by that page.
Who can get it
- You run a business with 1 to 50 employees that has been trading for more than six months
- Turnover is above €30,000 a year and you hold current tax clearance from Revenue
- You are not in primary agriculture, gambling, adult entertainment, tobacco or unauthorised cannabis products
- It is advice, not a cash grant: up to two days of a specialist Green Consultant's time and a written report with specific recommendations for your business.
- The report is what the Energy Efficiency Grant needs. That grant pays 75% of the cost of the technology and equipment identified in a Green for Business Report, a GreenStart report or an SEAI energy audit, up to €10,000.
- A brand new start-up does not qualify yet: the Local Enterprise Office requires more than six months trading and turnover above €30,000.
