Fuel Income Support Scheme

What it is
Funding of €20 million a month for five months, across the farming and fisheries fuel supports, with this scheme helping farmers and agricultural contractors with fuel costs. The rate is anticipated at around 20 cent per litre on estimated March to July use, worked out from the 2025 Marked Gas Oil (green diesel) use you declared. It is subject to the overall budget. The scheme's funding window covered March to the end of July 2026. Applications closed on 27 May 2026. Budget 2027 agreed to extend the fuel support schemes to the end of 2026, so check the official page for the rate and how to apply for the extension. Budget 2027 announced that the fuel support schemes for farmers and agricultural contractors, fishermen and women and horticulture producers, including this one, are to be extended to the end of 2026. The allocation is €31.2 million across them for the five months August to December 2026. The rate for the extension and how to apply have not been published yet, so check the official page.
Who can get it
- You're a farmer with a valid 2025 BISS application as an active farmer AND a continuing 2026 BISS application, or DAFM producer registration for an intensive pig or poultry enterprise (a new-entrant route applies if you applied for a herd number by 15 May 2026)
- You're an agricultural or forestry contractor who is VAT-registered, tax-compliant and operated in both 2025 and 2026 (new entrants need VAT registration plus 2026 MGO purchase receipts)
- The official page's introduction names fishers, but the Department's FAQ says fishers cannot apply under this scheme and that a separate scheme run by Bord Iascaigh Mhara is for the fishing sector. The eligibility section spells out farmers and contractors only.
- Applications closed on 27 May 2026. They were made through MyAgFood or on a downloadable form sent to fuelsub@agriculture.gov.ie.
- This is distinct from the Diesel Rebate Scheme (a Revenue excise repayment for licensed road hauliers and bus operators, not farmers).
- Budget 2027 agreed to extend the fuel support schemes to the end of 2026. The rate and how to apply for the extension have not been published yet, so check the official page.
- A minimum payment of €100 applied, so smaller claims were not paid. The rate could be adjusted downward to fit the overall budget.
