EU Just Transition Fund (Midlands)

What it is
EU-funded programme, up to €169 million by 2027, to help the Midlands move on from peat extraction: money for local business diversification, SMEs and start-ups, research and innovation, and community and environmental projects. Only for the designated Midlands Just Transition territory.
Who can get it
- Your project or business is based in the Just Transition territory: all of Laois, Longford, Offaly, Roscommon or Westmeath, or the municipal districts of Ballinasloe (Galway), Athy or Clane-Maynooth (Kildare), or Carrick-on-Suir or Thurles (Tipperary)
- Your project fits one of the fund's priorities: diversifying the local economy and creating jobs, restoring peatlands or repurposing industrial heritage sites, or sustainable local transport for former peat communities
- Covers a wide range of investment, including SMEs and start-ups, research and innovation, circular economy, peat replacement for horticulture or the bioeconomy, training and upskilling, and infrastructure.
- The main project-facing route is the Local and Regional Economic Strategies Support Scheme (LRESSS), administered by Pobal on behalf of the Department and the Eastern and Midland Regional Assembly (EMRA), see pobal.ie for open calls.
