What it is
An annual, tax-free lump sum for carers, €2,000 for each person you care for, paid automatically each June to most recipients.
Who can get it
- You are getting Carer's Allowance, Carer's Benefit or Domiciliary Care Allowance, in which case it is paid automatically, no application needed
- Or, if you are not on one of those payments, you apply separately on form CSG1 and show you gave full-time care for at least six continuous months spanning the first Thursday in June
- Paid once a year, around June, and it's completely exempt from income tax, PRSI and USC.
- It's €2,000 for each person you care for, so caring for two people can mean two payments.
- Most recipients, those already on Carer's Allowance, Carer's Benefit or Domiciliary Care Allowance, don't need to do anything, it's paid automatically.
- If you are applying separately on form CSG1, your six-month caring period must span the first Thursday in June that year.
